May 6, 2000
Cell phones are everywhere these days, and choosing the right one has become extremely complicated. Wireless phones have become less like telephones and more like hand-held computers. How can you choose the one that's right for you? What features do you really need? Delly Tamer is founder and CEO of LetsTalk.com, and he'll join Bob Potter and Chris Farrell on this edition of Sound Money to answer these questions and more.

  • The NEWS & VIEWS of Chris Farrell: Growth is Good, Revisited
In early 1997, I wrote a commentary called "Growth Is Good." The commentary sparked a lot of spirited criticism, ranging from my underestimating how growth would lead to inflation to my ignorance about the environmental damage from growth. In other words, fast economic growth was bad.... Yet today's social and economic story is that a rising tide does lift all boats. The wages of low-income workers are rising rapidly, and income inequality has stopped widening. The welfare caseload has fallen by 50%. Unemployment is at a three decade low. Growth is good and the Fed should err on the side of giving a high-tech economy room to run.

  • The NEWS & VIEWS of Chris Farrell: The Case For Federal Deposit Insurance Reform
There is so much to discuss. How low will stocks go? Should Microsoft be broken up? Will the Fed hike rates by half-a-point? But I want to focus today's commentary on the pressing issue of federal deposit insurance reform. I bet our listeners have been debating the topic at work and at the neighborhood barbecue! Yet now, when the economy is strong and credit is overflowing, is the time to consider ways to minimize the financial stress that will come with an economic downturn.

Investment Newsletters
with Mark Hulbert
Listen
May 20, 2000
The Hulbert Financial Digest grew out of Mark Hulbert's skepticism at the returns promised by a number of investment newsletters touting their publications at an investment seminar in New Orleans in 1979. When Hulbert investigated their claims, he found them to be exaggerations. He's been following the performance of such newsletters ever since then, and he'll join Bob Potter and Chris Farrell on this edition of Sound Money to discuss his findings. Hulbert writes a column for the Sunday New York Times and is quoted regularly in national financial publications.

  • The NEWS & VIEWS of Chris Farrell: Policy Risk to the Expansion
U.S. policy makers are putting the longest expansion in U.S. history in jeopardy. First, let's look at monetary policy. The Federal Reserve is clearly determined to slow the economy. The nation's central bank hiked rates by a larger-than-normal half-point last Tuesday, and warned that further rate increases could come over the summer. The Fed, along with most mainstream economists, is convinced the U.S. economy is growing at such a fast pace and unemployment has dropped so low that inflation is unavoidable unless the economy decelerates. Of course, the Fed has been fretting about tight labor markets reviving inflation since 1996. The risk now is that the Fed tightens too much, and sends the economy into a tailspin.

Outlook for the Economy
with Alan Levenson
Listen
May 27, 2000
In T.Rowe Price's Economic Outlook 2000, chief economist Alan Levenson indicated that he expects the current economic expansion to continue. He said that he doubted that inflation will pick up, but noted, "If inflation did start to rise, the Fed would look at this grand old expansion, figure it had lived a long life, and take it out back and shoot it." What's his outlook now that we're well into the year 2000? Find out on this edition of Sound Money when he joins Bob Potter and Chris Farrell to discuss the economy, the markets, and the investment climate.
